About the Historical Healing Waters of Soap Lake
Originally called Smokiam — Salish for “healing waters” — Soap Lake has been a gathering place for healing for thousands of years.
Soap Lake was formed by the Missoula Floods at the foot of the Grand Coulee. It’s located in central/eastern Washington along State Highway 17, part of the Coulee Corridor National Scenic Byway. Soap Lake is said to have the highest diverse mineral content of body of water on the planet. There are 23 naturally occurring minerals present in the water and mud.
In the early 1900s, Soap Lake was a booming spa and recreation resort with sanitariums, hotels and bath houses. People from around the world came to “Nature’s Spa” seeking the healing properties of the lake and mud thought to be successful in treating a variety of ailments.
Today, visitors still travel from around the world to soak in the mineral-rich healing waters. At Soap Lake Natural Spa & Resort, guests have the unique opportunity to soak in mineral baths in the comforts of their guest rooms.
The local non-profit Soap Lake Conservancy formed with a mission to preserve and restore Soap Lake. They are dedicated to actively improving the vitality of the Soap Lake area through education and promotion of the therapeutic recreational, and cultural qualities of Soap Lake.
